Yesterday our resident handicapper Swinging Johnson went 3-0 in his NFL picks and now turns to Sunday’s pair of games to do it all over again. Let’s check out his take on the two preseason tilts today.
1:30 PM ET Lions at Colts
The Colts have a number of injuries to contend with, not the least of which is the lynchpin to their entire season, Andrew Luck. Therefore, the trigger-pulling for today’s contest will be in the hands of career journeyman Scott Tolzien and football purgatory nomad Stephen Morris. Both were undrafted coming into the league and experience certainly isn’t an asset to either signal caller. The Indianapolis aerial attack may turn out to be more of a mild affront in this one.
The Lions will be searching for someone to move the chains in the backfield after a 2017 season bereft of a running game. However, their passing game was on point and it is possible their starting quarterback Matthew Stafford could be in the mix, at least in the early going, to shake the rust off and get the lead out. I believe Detroit is more likely to send their starting players into this one and thus be more equipped to put points on the board than their hosts, which is why I am backing the Lions as one of my NFL picks today.

8:00 PM ET Seahawks vs. Chargers
The newly christened LA Chargers will look to put San Diego in its rearview mirror and begin a winning tradition in Southern California. There are many reasons to believe a revival is looming as Phillip Rivers has more than enough weapons if his arsenal can remain in working condition. Melvin Gordon can be a game-changing back if he remains healthy while Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, and their first-round selection out of Clemson Mike Williams form a tantalizing triumvirate on the wings.
The Seahawks were fairly quiet in the offseason but did sign bruising running back Eddie Lacy to a one-year deal. Seattle is hoping Lacy fills the void left by Marshawn Lynch in the backfield in order to move the chains in short yardage situations and break for big gainers every now and again. The Seahawks defense will once again be the crown jewel of this team but don’t expect to see many of the Seattle defensive starters against the Chargers tonight.
The NFL odds are slightly favoring the home team in this preseason battle tonight. I believe the Chargers are far more likely to pull out all the stops because getting off on the right foot is a golden opportunity to cultivate a brand new fan base. Let’s give the Chargers a small play for our NFL picks here as we look forward to cashing another preseason football winner.
