The Seattle Seahawks defeated rival Arizona Cardinals 22-16 on Thursday Night Football, but it did not come without a steep cost.
It’s entirely possible the Seahawks would have rather taken a loss and walked away without the enormous amount of injuries they suffered. Kam Chancellor, Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin all had issues come up during the game but continued to play. Other teammates were not so fortunate.
Offensive lineman Duane Brown, running back C.J. Prosise, and cornerback Richard Sherman (among others) were all knocked out of the game. Sherman himself is lost for the season with a ruptured Achilles. In his post-game interview session, Baldwin left no uncertainty how he feels about Thursday Night Football. These responses are all listed on Yahoo.com.
“This s— should be illegal,” Baldwin said, via Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune. “It is not OK. It’s not OK. You can quote me on that.
“This is not OK. … Absolutely, guys do not have enough time to recover. You can’t recover in four days.”
Some fans and others around the league sometimes point out that the players now get what amounts to a mini-bye week since neither team will play for another 10 days. Baldwin didn’t exactly buy that excuse, either.
“Tell them f— you,” he said, via Matt Calkins of the Seattle Times.
Baldwin doesn’t mince words and it’s pretty easy to understand the exasperation the players feel towards this game. It puts them at needless risk and most Thursday night games aren’t that enjoyable for fans to watch. The quality of the game pretty clearly suffers when teams face such a short turnaround. This could be a point of contention when labor negotiations between the Player’s Union and the NFL start up for the next collective bargaining agreement. There’s too much money at stake for the game to go away, but players are going to want change.
Putting the salaries of players aside, they are asked to give their all every game. It’s simply too much to go through the meat grinder of an NFL game twice in four days. If you were unsure for any reason, just go ask Doug Baldwin how he feels about it.
