The New York Giants have finally fired head coach Ben McAdoo. With a talented roster still in tow, who can they tab to be the next man in charge?
After firing McAdoo on Monday, the Giants will likely name Steve Spagnuolo as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2017 regular season. Still, the coaching search will be on and then some for the next big hire, something New York can’t afford to miss on. Here are five names to watch.
5. Mike Smith
The Giants went the young, unproven route with McAdoo two years ago, and while the team made the playoffs in 2016 as an 11-5 wild card, things went south quickly. Smith has done a nice job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in that same span, helping to bring along young talents such as Kwon Alexander and Vernon Hargreaves III.
Smith also has ample experience as a head coach, serving as the Atlanta Falcons’ lead man from 2008-14, once reaching the NFC Championship Game. Smith isn’t the sexiest pick in the world, but he would give the Giants a knowledgeable hand and someone who can calm the waters in East Rutherford.
Additionally, Smith is 58 years old, making him young enough to conceivably stick around for a while before finally retiring.
