The league’s offseason is underway and NFL free agency gets started on March 14. Here is a look at the best running backs that could be for a team’s taking.

The start of the NFL’s 99th fiscal year is on the horizon. That means all 32 teams have plenty of decisions to make, some more than others. Which players will be given the franchise tag? Who will be released due to salary-cap reasons? There is a lot of shaping and restructuring to do for all of these rosters.

With the start of free agency next month, it’s time to take a glance at the top players at the specific positions who could hit the open market. Here’s a look at the best of the best when it comes to the running backs who may become unrestricted free agents at 4:00 pm ET on March 14.

5. Rex Burkhead, New England Patriots

Bill Belichick had quite the stable of running backs at his disposal this season. From Dion Lewis and James White to Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead. And don’t forget Brandon Bolden and fullback James Develin. The New England Patriots finished 10th in the league by rushing for 118.1 yards per game. The team totaled 48 offensive touchdowns, 16 on the ground. And all of those scores came via Lewis (6), Gillislee (5) and Burkhead (5).

Speaking of the latter, the former Cincinnati Bengals’ backfield component ran for 264 yards and the aforementioned five touchdowns. Burkhead also caught 30 passes for 254 yards and three TDs. All told, he rolled up career highs in total yards from scrimmage (518) and total touchdowns (8) in his first season with the franchise. And he managed these numbers in only 10 regular-season games.

It’s worth noting that Burkhead, Bolden and Lewis are all potential unrestricted free agents. And speaking of the latter…
