Ezekiel Elliott appeals six-game suspension

NFL

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is suspended for the first six games of the NFL season, but he appealed that suspension on Tuesday.

The Dallas Cowboys are hoping to not have to spend the first six games of the 2017 NFL season without running back Ezekiel Elliott, who was suspended last week. Elliott had three days to appeal the suspension, which he did on Tuesday. The 22-year-old led the NFL in rushing during his rookie season last year, and without him in the lineup, there will be added pressure on second-year quarterback, Dak Prescott.

Thomas Davis has been terrorizing offenses for years, and the Carolina Panthers made sure he would be doing so with their team for at least the next two seasons. The 34-year-old Davis signed a one-year extension with the team on Tuesday, with his new deal running through 2018. He has racked up at least 100 tackles in each of the last five seasons, and appears there is no slowing him down at this point.

Ryan Mathews is finally healthy, though he just recently became unemployed. The Philadelphia Eagles waited until Mathews got his clean bill of health on Tuesday, before releasing him a couple of hours later. The team brought in LeGarrette Blount to take some of the carries this season, making Mathews expendable, and he will now look to join his third NFL team. The 29-year-old battled back from back surgery this offseason, only to be cut by the Eagles in a strange move.

Jay Ajayi got a clean bill of health as well on Tuesday, and he is officially out of concussion protocol. It has been a rough offseason for Miami, who lost starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill to a knee injury this preseason already. The team signed Jay Cutler to take his place, so having Ajayi back and healthy is a good sign for a Dolphins team that has playoff aspirations in 2017.

Finally, it looks like Lucky Whitehead should have been named something different. In the same offseason that saw him get cut by the Dallas Cowboys after being wrongly identified during a robbery, Whitehead broke his foot on Tuesday. Whitehead was supposed to return kicks for the New York Jets this season, but it looks like he will be out indefinitely.
