Bears & Lions bring the money in Saturday’s NFL picks

NFL, Odds

The first week of preseason went almost as well as possible with our resident handicapper, Swinging Johnson, connecting on four of his five NFL picks. Let’s see what the Swinger likes on Saturday’s preseason NFL card.

7:30 ET Jets at Lions

As I reviewed the NFL odds for tonight’s action I saw that the Lions were 5 ½-point favorites over the Jets and immediately deemed the line to be a bit strong in order to make the squares pay a price for fading the woeful Jets. I’m like any sharp bettor who believes fading the public is better than being the public. But often times guys who try to be sharp, try way too hard and become more concerned about not looking like a square than being intellectually honest and capping the game objectively.

Personally, I don’t care what I look like as long as my wallet is fat. The public isn’t always wrong and in this case, anything short of Detroit laying a touchdown works for me. You see, this is the second preseason game and the starters will get a few more reps than last week. The Lions put up 24 points on the Colts with only three of 35 passes thrown by starting QB Matthew Stafford. The backups Jake Ruddock and Brad Kaaya looked sharp, combining for 21-of-32 passing for 213 yards with three TDs and no picks. On the other hand, the Jets scored a touchdown in the first quarter of their preseason opener and their offense was never heard from again in their 7-3 home win over the Titans.

New York got their win last week, as I predicted they would, in front of a victory-starved Jets’ audience but will now face a far more daunting offense in front of a hostile crowd. The Jets will blow again this year and tonight we will see the beginning of a season-long pattern of losing football. Back the Cats in your NFL picks and cash a ticket!

10:00 PM ET Bears at Cardinals

The Bears are now getting three points in the desert but if you had the presence of mind to bet this game earlier in the week you would have had Chicago at a point spread of+3 ½ and gotten that all-important hook (that’s a half-point to the uninitiated). Three is the most important number in football because so many games are decided by a field goal. As I write this I see the line falling to 2 ½ in some offshore shops which means there is strong action on the underdog here. We understand it because we are on the same side as the sharps in this one.

There is a quarterback controversy brewing in the Windy City as veteran Mike Glennon has been anointed as the starter over No. 2 overall pick in the draft Mitchell Trubisky. It’s little wonder that Bears’ fans are pining for a savior after suffering through the volatile Jay Cutler years, which produced only one playoff appearance, and are clamoring for Trubisky. The former Tar Heel did little to quell the noise with an 18-of-24 passing performance that garnered 166 yards through the air, one touchdown, and 38 yards on the ground.

Trubisky will see plenty of action again tonight which is like getting a starting quarterback throughout in a preseason contest. The Bears’ backups also seem more capable while the Cardinals will be looking to keep the likes of David Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, and Carson Palmer healthy which means little to no action. Let’s grab the shrinking number on the Bears but truth be told, I believe the oddsmakers have the wrong favorite in this one and we won’t need any bit of that head start. But just in case, better to get the points than lay them.
