Falcons vs. Steelers & Saints vs. Chargers Money-Making NFL picks

NFL, Odds

Preseason has been very good to our handicapping expert Swinging Johnson as he now owns a 6-1 ATS record and gunning for two more today. Let’s see what Swinger has lined up for Sunday’s  NFL picks as he keeps cashing those tickets!

4:00 PM ET Falcons at Steelers

The Falcons dropped their preseason opener 23-20 to the Dolphins while the Steelers looked stout in their 20-12 victory over the Giants. However, the big guns for Pittsburgh will be locked up tight as Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell (contract dispute) will all be out of action for this one. Even Pittsburgh’s backup QB Landry Jones will most likely continue to sit due to injury. Therefore, it will be the Steelers’ fourth-round pick out of Tennessee Josh Dobbs making the start with the undrafted rookie out of Wisconsin Bart Houston waiting in the wings.

The fact that head coach Mike Tomlin is taking such a cautious approach to this game gives me a good reason to back the Dirty Birds in this one. And that is precisely why the NFL odds makers have gone from opening the Steelers as three-point home favorites to where the Falcons are now sitting as three-point road chalk.  That’s right, a whopping six point swing and although we’re getting a crummy number, we can’t help but believe that Falcons’ coach Dan Quinn won’t be gunning for a victory just for the sake of morale after a soul-crushing loss in the Super Bowl followed by a preseason opening loss to the Dolphins. Back Atlanta in your NFL picks today.

8:00 PM ET Saints at Chargers

The only thing worse than getting blasted at home by a good team is losing on the road to a lousy team. I submit to you the LA Chargers’ (still getting used to that LA versus San Diego designation) 48-17 waxing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks last week compared to the Saints’ dubious distinction of losing 20-14 to the Browns in Cleveland. Well, it’s all good in the hood because this is preseason after all and nobody is going to remember squat once the games are played for real. But right now, these trivialities are not so trivial because we are staking cold, hard cash on the line and using last week as part of our evaluation for this week.

One thing we know is that Phillip Rivers will play downs for the Chargers and he looked razor-sharp during the brief time he spent on the field last week, going for 5-for-6 which was good for 56 passing yards and a TD strike to Antonio Gates. What we don’t know is whether New Orleans’ Drew Brees will make an appearance, but my sources are saying he sits again.

Boys and girls, always take notice when a line crosses a three or a seven. Those are highly important numbers and in this game, the line opened at LA -2 ½ and has gone to 3 ½ in every offshore shop except TheGreek.com. That means tons of money has poured in on Los Angeles and we’re betting much of it is sharp action to make the books not only move to three but open themselves up to a middle by moving to 3 ½. Let’s back the home team here as the Chargers are desperately trying to cultivate a new fan base and the only way to do that is to just win, baby! Lay the points with the Bolts.
