Roger Goodell responds to Donald Trump’s ‘divisive’ comments on the NFL

NFL News

Donald Trump had pointed criticism on the current state of the NFL on Friday night and now NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has responded.

I’m trying to stick to sports, but the President of the United States spoke about sports, so as the world of politics and sports intersect again, the NFL was the latest to be in the crosshairs of Donald Trump. On Friday, Trump spoke to an audience in Huntsville where he brought up the NFL and had some criticism for the players who kneel during the national anthem. In fact, the President of the United States called those players who disrespect the game “a son of a b****” and said an NFL owner, of which he’s friends with many of them, should just fire the guy.

You can see the comments for yourself in the video below in case you don’t believe me the President of the United States would say that.

Trump later went on to comment on the failing ratings for the NFL and the officiating which is trying to make the game safer for the players. The President of the United States wanted to see more hits and the game is suffering as a result of an emphasis on making the game safer to try to prevent concussions, among other injuries that can leave the player’s brain susceptible to disease.

The crowd loved what Trump had to say, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell termed the president’s comments as divisive and disrespectful. Goodell released a statement saying the NFL creates a sense of unity and there was a failure to understand the good things the NFL teams and players are doing.

You can read the entire statement below, courtesy of Pro Football Talk.

“The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we’ve experienced over the last month.  Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.”

Goodell has taken harsher stands on NFL players smoking marijuana than he did on Trump basically saying the NFL sucks because it’s becoming a safer league, players are kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequalities and social injustices and the TV ratings are down.

Several NFL players have responded with more passion after Trump’s comments on Friday night. NFLPA DeMaurice Smith also released a statement saying the union will never back down when it comes to protecting players on and off the field.

And now we can all wait to see what Trump will tweet in response to his attack on minorities in the NFL and why he wants the game to be less safe for the players.
