Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton made some controversial comments in a press conference on Wednesday and is already paying the price.
If you missed it Wednesday, Newton made some truly ridiculous comments towards a female reporter during his press conference.
Not only did Newton make those comments, Jourdan Rodrique says that Cam did not apologize afterward either.
This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similiar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments.
It hasn’t taken too long for Newton to start paying the price for his flippant and disrespectful comments. He’s already lost one sponsor.
It’s not very hard to understand why a sponsor would be ready to bail on Newton. No company wants to be associated with a person who thinks females are less than their male counterparts. Newton has to look even worse to sponsors when you compare these comments from Oct. 2 in USA Today–
“We cannot forget the fact that sports brings people together,” Newton said. “For the two hours, three hours, whatever a time that a sporting event is on or your team is playing … people from different shapes, colors, creeds, ethnicities and cultures come together. At that moment, they’re rooting for the same thing.
One would hope that Newton would realize how wrong he was and how badly he looks. It would be nice to hear a sincere apology. It would be even better if Newton never said it in the first place. Maybe losing money will help him recognize he needs to do some growth in his attitude towards the people around him covering the game.
