Green Bay Packers cut Martellus Bennett

Martellus Bennett’s time with the Green Bay Packers has prematurely come to an end with the team releasing him on Wednesday.

The offseason marriage between the Green Bay Packers and veteran tight end Martellus Bennett was supposed to be one of the better and more productive ones this season. Well, things don’t always turn out the way they’re planned, and on Wednesday, the two went their separate ways.

As first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Packers released the tight end on Wednesday, reportedly for failing to disclose a medical designation.

When the Packers signed Bennett this offseason, it seemed like a perfect fit for most out there. Bennett would be playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Aaron Rodgers, and he could presumably be a big help in leading the team to a Super Bowl this season. Well, that’s not how things have gone, as Rodgers went down with a serious shoulder injury and Bennett has missed the last two Packers games with a shoulder issue of his own.

On the season, the veteran has just 24 catches for 233 yards.

Of course, the question turns to what’s next for Bennett. It was not too long ago that he took to Instagram where he alluded to the notion that this could be his last season in the NFL, so one has to wonder whether or not this release by the Packers is the end of his career. Or, could he maybe finish the season out somewhere else if they come calling?

Either way, many out there will admit they’re a bit stunned that Bennett’s time with the Packers wasn’t as successful as initially assumed.
