The Philadelphia Eagles may be underdogs in Super Bowl LII, but wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has gone all-in with a bold guarantee.
One of the most famous guarantees in sports history, let alone Super Bowl history, came before Super Bowl III when Joe Namath declared the New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts and then helped deliver the upset. It’s been a fairly quiet week leading up to Super Bowl LII, but Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has now channeled Namath.
When asked what would happen if the Eagles beat the New England Patriots on Sunday, Jeffery cut the question off and offered a short, definitive response (via Martin Frank of the Wilmington News Journal).
“Ain’t no ‘if,’ man. When we win on Sunday, ain’t no telling what we’re going to do. But we’re probably going to celebrate, have some fun.”
“We’re bringing that trophy back to Philly,” Jeffery said.
Jeffery was still technically a member of the Chicago Bears a little over a year ago when he guaranteed “we are going to win the Super Bowl next year.” He didn’t specify what team he would be playing on that would win the Super Bowl, which was convenient as he was set to hit free agency. He wound of signing with the Eagles, had a solid regular season (57 catches for 789 yards and nine touchdowns) and then most recently had two touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game.
Jeffery is also not buying into the Patriots’ mystique.
“Man, I don’t give a damn about all of that, “That’s in the past. We’re in the present. It’s 2018. It’s a new year. All that stuff in the past, that’s in the past. It’s a new year, man.”
Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ players aren’t going to give Jeffery’s words any creed publicly, and extra motivation or bulletin board material won’t be needed. But there is now something a little bigger for the public and assembled media to chew on before Super Bowl Sunday.
