Rapping Peter Dinklage, Solo spot among top 10 Super Bowl ads

No one should expect a rapping Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones season 8, but at least now we know what it might look like.

As usual, the commercials got almost as much attention as the football being played during Super Bowl LII on Sunday night, and that’s no small thing since the Philadelphia Eagles’ triumph over the New England Patriots was an exciting one. Our completely unscientific feeling is that the public enjoyed the Super Bowl ads more than the past few years, even with many of them premiering ahead of the big game, continuing a trend that’s been accelerating as of late.

While there’s no one way to determine who “won” the commercial battle for this year, TiVo gave it a shot with its own data and formulated a top 10 list of the best and most engaging ads.

The winner? The Doritos/Mountain Dew rap battle featuring Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman (though really Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott).

Also notable was that among the numerous movie and TV trailers, TiVo gave the nod to the Solo: A Star Wars Story TV spot as the best of the bunch, which counts as at least a mild surprise since Avengers: Infinity War also rolled out new footage during the Super Bowl.

Look, we’re not saying Tyrion needs to drop any hot bars during Game of Thrones season 8, just that if he does, it might go over better than Ed Sheeran’s guest appearance if he did.

It’s also proof that the much talked about trend of companies using more celebrities in their Super Bowl ads is paying off. That commercial just isn’t the same without Dinklage and Freeman, and kudos to them for having the sense of humor to be down for it.
