Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers agree to $137.5 million deal

NFL Free Agency, NFL News, San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have more cap space than any other NFL team, and they used a large chunk of it to sign Jimmy Garoppolo.

After trading a second-round pick at the trade deadline to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers are making sure their franchise quarterback doesn’t get away. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the 49ers have signed Garoppolo to a whopping five-year, $137.5 million deal. The contract is the richest in NFL history.

Garoppolo, 26, is going to make an average of $27.5 million per year, the highest annual value in league history as well. With the 49ers, Garoppolo made five starts and won them all, leading a San Francisco team that was previously 1-10 with C.J. Beathard and Brian Hoyer at the helm.

Last year, Garoppolo threw seven touchdowns against five interceptions with 1,560 passing yards while completing 67.4 percent of his attempts. With him under center, the 49ers have real hope to make a playoff run in 2018, especially with general manager John Lynch still having close to $100 million in projected space.

Garoppolo’s contract surpasses the numbers we saw last year for Derek Carr (five years and $125 million) and Matthew Stafford (five years and $135 million. The record for guaranteed money on a single deal is Andrew Luck’s $87 million, signed in June 2016. The guaranteed number for Garoppolo has not been announced yet.

The New England Patriots selected Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was only afforded two starts during Tom Brady’s DeflateGate suspension, the only action he saw under head coach Bill Belichick. Garoppolo won both of those starts as well, defeating the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins before sustaining a shoulder injury.
