Odell Beckham Jr. suggests he won’t play next preseason

New York Giants, NFC East, NFL News

A lot of people don’t like the NFL preseason, and it’s seen some of the best players get hurt. Odell Beckham Jr. doesn’t plan on taking any chances.

The NFL preseason is not a fan or player favorite. The games don’t matter, and only breed more opportunities for guys to get hurt. Last preseason, we saw Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware suffer season-ending injuries.

Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a sprained ankle in the preseason, and had to miss multiple weeks. He came back sooner than expected, but was still playing hurt. Beckham suffered a broken ankle in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Beckham suggested in a tweet that he doesn’t plan to play at all next preseason.

After a fan asked Beckham to not play any preseason snaps next year, he responded with just a simple zero. He’s still recovering from that broken ankle, but one would imagine he’s going to be healthy by the time preseason rolls around.

Even if he’s 100 percent healthy, the Giants should follow through with this. There’s no reason to put your franchise’s best player in harms way in games that don’t mean anything.

Every year the same conversation comes up about shortening the preseason, because we have injuries like this. This might heat up that conversation again, but it’s clear where Beckham stands at least on him playing in the preseason from here on out.

Beckham might not play any preseason games anyway because he’s still looking for a new contract. If he so chooses he could use last year’s injury as leverage to get that new contract, and just hold out throughout training camp and into the preseason. It will be interesting to see if he actually follows through with this.
