San Francisco 49ers sign Richard Sherman to 3-year deal

NFL Free Agency, NFL News, San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are continuing to improve. On Saturday night, the team signed former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman to a three-year deal.

The San Francisco 49ers are not playing around. After acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo at midseason rom the New England Patriots and the signing him to a five-year, $137.5 million extension earlier this offseason, general manager John Lynch has now landed an All-Pro cornerback in Richard Sherman. The contract is for three years and $39 million, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The 49ers were able to capitalize on the Seattle Seahawks’ rebuild, with Seattle releasing Sherman on Friday to save $11 million against the cap in 2018. The California native and former Stanford star made San Francisco his first and only visit, signing on the dotted line on Saturday night.

Sherman, 29, is coming off a torn Achilles but should be ready to go by June, giving him plenty of time to recuperate for the season. The 49ers will likely continue to build up the roster throughout free agency and the draft, with Lynch having $70 million to use. Additionally, the 49ers have the ninth-overall pick in the NFL Draft after winning a coin flip with the Oakland Raiders at the combine last week in Indianapolis.

It’s incredible how quickly the 49ers have rebuilt their organization. In November, the team was 1-10 and starting C.J. Beathard at quarterback. Then, Garoppolo was inserted into the starting lineup, and San Francisco won five consecutive games to finish the season.

It’s easy to see why the 49ers will be the trendy pick come summer, and even easier to understand why Sherman signed so quickly.
