NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock has Sam Darnold as the highest-rated quarterback in his rankings. Is it the right call?
We are less than a week away from the NFL Draft. You know what that means? Complete and utter chaos. People from all corners are going to be telling you about how so-and-so is going to fall to their team in the draft. Analysts are ready and waiting with a binder full of notes that the research guy gave them, looking to act smart.
Then, there is Mike Mayock. Mayock, who once played for the New York Giants under head coach Bill Parcells, is the demigod of draft. He understands what so many of us don’t, and he tells it like it is. Don’t believe me? Watch NFL Network and listen to Mayock break down tape of a sixth-round kid of the Presbyterian Blue Hose like it was the most famous Super Bowl clip of all time.
Keeping all that in mind, Mayock has released his final positional rankings for the draft via NFL.com, and he has Sam Darnold as the best quarterback in the class. Josh Allen of Wyoming comes in second, with Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen rounding out the top four.
Darnold showed a world of ability at USC, although his turnover numbers were a bit high. In 27 games over two seasons with the Trojans, the California native threw for 7,229 yards on 8.5 yards per attempt, accompanied by 57 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. However, he threw 13 of those picks in 2017, giving some teams pause.
It will be interesting to see whether the Cleveland Browns and general manager John Dorsey share the same opinion as Mayock when the come on the clock Thursday night.
