Seattle can handle Kaepernick’s off the field issues, perhaps better than any other team.
Not every NFL franchise has what it takes to handle Colin Kaepernick’s off the field baggage. The Seattle Seahawks are one of the teams that do. Combine that with their need for a high quality backup for Russell Wilson and it’s easy to see why Seattle is the ideal new home for the controversial QB.
Fortunately for Kaepernick, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is refusing to close the door on signing him this offseason. Carroll insists that the team is still evaluating all of its options at the quarterback position. That means the Seahawks could still be in the market for a backup quarterback depending on what moves they make in this week’s NFL Draft.
Provided the Seahawks don’t find an amazing value in the Draft, they should move to bring Kaepernick into the fold. The dynamic personality of Carroll as the team’s spokesperson combined with the liberal nature of fans in the Pacific Northwest would provide Kaepernick with one of his the softest potential landing spots in the NFL.
On the field, it’s a move that would make a lot of sense for everyone. Seattle has constructed its entire offense on Wilson’s skill set. His ability to throw inside the pocket and make plays on the perimeter make him a unique quarterback. Kaepernick isn’t nearly as good as Wilson at those things, but he is at least stylistically similar to Wilson.
That’s a very underrated aspect of NFL backup quarterbacks. It’s not only important to find a signal-caller that has the talent required to fill in for a few games, it’s also key to find one who doesn’t require you to totally change your offensive system when they enter the game. Signing Kaepernick would allow Seattle’s offense to remain relatively unchanged if the Seahwaks were forced to go to him for any length of time.
Signing Kaepernick might earn Seattle some extra jeers on the road, but those would quickly turn to cheers as soon as he helped the team on the field. That’s why he and the Seahawks are a perfect match for one another.
