Chicago Bears go all in to help quarterback Mitch Trubisky succeed

Chicago Bears, NFL Draft

The Chicago Bears know Mitch Trubisky needs help, and they’re giving it to him in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears understand they can only go as far as Mitch Trubisky will take them this season. That’s why the team’s front office has gone all in on providing their quarterback with some new weapons this offseason.

First off, the Bears entered into free agency with a clear imperative to give Trubisky some weapons on the outside. That’s why they spent big money to add Taylor Gabriel and Allen Robinson to their offensive core. Fortunately for Trubisky, the Bears didn’t stop there.

The Bears’ quest to prop up their young signal caller extended into the 2018 NFL Draft. Chicago made the bold decision to move back into the second round to grab a potential difference-maker. Adding Memphis wideout Anthony Miller could be the key to unlocking Mark Helrich’s offensive attack.

Miller entered Memphis as a walk-on and left the Tigers as an absolute star. He’s perfectly made to thrive as a slot receiver at the next level. Look for him to get plenty of opportunities to catch the ball underneath, with Gabriel and Robinson threatening defenses over the top.

The key for Trubisky will be to prove that he can make better decisions with the football. He ended last season with an ugly touchdown to interception ratio of 1:1. Trubisky will need to cut down on the interceptions if he’s going to increase his team’s win total.

Coach Matt Nagy and Co. clearly think that providing him superior pass-catching options will help Trubisky become a more efficient passer. Adding three potential starting wide receivers definitely qualifies as a complete overhaul.

Don’t forget the Bears also made a point to bring in a safety blanket for Trubisky during free agency, as well. Prying tight end Trey Burton away from Philadelphia may not have garnered a ton of headlines, but it might be the most impactful move out of all the team’s offseason transactions. If Burton can stay healthy, he’ll provide Trubisky with a safety valve he hasn’t been able to enjoy during his career to date and join Adam Shaheen.

This season may very well end up being a make or break campaign for Trubisky. At the very least, he’ll need to show significant progress in his second season as a pro. Fortunately, the Bears are doing everything they can to make him a success. Trubisky and his four new receiver targets will go a long way towards determining Chicago’s success this season.
