The 2018 NFL Draft is still fresh in everyone’s mind. Here are five teams that addressed very specific needs and the benefits may be seen sooner than later.
After the mocks come the picks. And after the selections comes the analysis. Lots of analysis.
There were 256 player selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. There have been 32 grades for 32 first-round picks and constant breakdowns of the entire ’18 class. In other words…But wait, there’s more.
So what teams did the most with what they got? Here are five clubs that got the most out of their selections and don’t be all that surprised if a few make a major move in the standings this fall.
5. New York Giants
It sounds like a broken record but the fact is that the New York Giants come off the worst season in the franchise is proud history. Their 13 losses in 2017 establish a dubious record for an organization that has been around since 1925. Hence, there’s a new general manager in the form of Dave Gettleman. And there’s a new head coach in Pat Shurmur, who comes over from the Minnesota Vikings. The former offensive coordinator of the Purple Gang has been in these shoes before – having been in charge of the Cleveland Browns from 2011-12.
One major reason for the Giants’ collapse this past season was a problem-plagued attack that lacked balance as well as the ability to protect quarterback Eli Manning. Hence the no-brainer selection of Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, who is tailor made for today’s game in terms of a runner, receiver and blocker. He also showed his ability on kickoff returns this past season. In his final season with the Nittany Lions, he totaled an impressive 2,329 total combined yards and scored 23 touchdowns.
One of the team’s new lineman Barkley will be running behind is second-round pick Will Hernandez. The 6-foot-2, 327-pound blocker figures to pair with new left tackle Nate Solder to give the Giants a formidable strong side punch. And in the fourth round, Gettleman grabbed an intriguing quarterback prospect in Richmond’s Kyle Lauletta. But it’s the combination of Barkley and Hernandez will have a big say in the Giants’ 2018 fortunes.
