Jarvis Landry thinks the Browns have two starting quarterbacks

Cleveland Browns

Jarvis Landry has great news for Browns fans. He thinks Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield both have what it take to be NFL starting quarterbacks.

The quarterback position has been a problem for the Browns since Bernie Kosar led the team. That could all be about to change if you’re inclined to believe Jarvis Landry. He is of the opinion that Cleveland currently have two players capable of being starting NFL quarterbacks on the roster.

Tyrod Taylor, of course, will begin the season as the Browns’ starter. Landry is particularly high on the former Bills’ signal caller. He describes Taylor’s play during training camp as “amazing.” In particular, Landry loves Taylor’s leadership skills and arm strength.

Landry also believes Taylor is the perfect mentor for Mayfield. He cites Taylor’s Pro Bowl appearance and Super Bowl ring as evidence of his qualifications. Taylor doesn’t want to cede the job to Mayfield anytime soon, but it’s only a matter of time before the No. 1 pick gets his chance. Landry isn’t concerned about any drop off once that transition occurs. He thinks Mayfield also is “qualified” to be a starting NFL quarterback.

Of course, Landry might not be the most objective source on the planet. He’s anxious to prove to everyone around the league that he’s one of the best receivers in football. If he’s going to produce like a number one wideout, he’ll need his quarterback to look his way. Complementing them in the press seems like a really good way to get a passer on your side.

No one will know the truth about Taylor until Week 1 when the proverbial bullets start flying. He should be a steadying influence for the Browns offense, but a return to the Pro Bowl is unlikely. The best Taylor can realistically hope for is to keep the team in the playoff race long enough to keep his starting spot for the full season.

Once 2019 arrives, the Browns are going to be fully committed to Baker Mayfield at the quarterback position. At that point, the organization needs to hope that Landry is dead on about the young quarterback. If he doesn’t emerge as a quality starter for the Browns soon the team are going to face a lot of tough questions about taking him at the top of the draft.
