Why are the Saints throwing up an ‘X’ after they score?

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints signed Dez Bryant in the hopes that the star wide receiver would give them a boost with their sights set on the Super Bowl, but Bryant suffered a heart-breaking, season-ending injury in his first practice with the team.

It took Dez Bryant more than half of the season to find a new home after the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways for him, and the former franchise icon seemed to be ready to settle in with the New Orleans Saints. Coming off of a statement win over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Rams, the Saints signing of Bryant seemed to confirm Sean Payton’s squad as Super Bowl favorites in the NFC.

Unfortunately, Bryant suffered a torn Achilles at Friday’s practice and will not be able to impact the Saints Super Bowl hopes in 2018. It was a heart-breaking injury, but the Saints have not forgotten about Dez and are paying tribute to the star receiver with each of their Week 10 touchdowns.

After Mark Ingram scored with a big receiving touchdown, he made sure to throw up the “X” in Bryant’s honor. Fellow running back Alvin Kamara did the same after a rushing score.

It was a great, small way of paying homage to Bryant, who probably should have been signed by a team much sooner and still had plenty to give to this Saints offense before suffering a serious injury.

It’s awful that Bryant won’t be able to play this year, as the 30-year-old seemed to be driven to prove everyone wrong. Ingram throwing up the “X” was awesome to see, and based on comments Payton made before the Saints Week 10 game, it seems like the team plans on getting an impact from Dez in 2019.

The Saints offense hasn’t missed a beat after last week’s dismantling of the Rams, as Drew Brees and Co. have gone to work against the Cincinnati Bengals. Brees’s touchdown to Ingram, by the way, tied Brett Favre’s record for most career touchdown passes, and he also threw a touchdown to superstar wideout Michael Thomas, he of the 200+ receiving yards in Week 9, in this one.
