5 offseason needs in 2019

Buffalo Bills, NFL, NFL Offseason

One year after reaching the playoffs, the Buffalo Bills were very disappointing. What parts of the team does the franchise need to focus on this offseason?

This past season, the Buffalo Bills won three fewer games than the club that reached the playoffs with 9-7 record in 2017. But the falloff from the previous year appeared to be a lot more dramatic as the club got off to a miserable 0-2 start and were blown out of games on too many occasions.

The results were a 6-10 finish and third place in the AFC East. There were very few positives, other than the fact that the club may have found its quarterback of the future in Josh Allen. But the bottom line is that the Bills have made one playoff appearance this century. And while the list of needs for this club could be very long, the format says just five here.

5. More options at tight end

It’s a position that wound up not producing much this past season, especially when it came to the passing game. And as still-learning quarterback Josh Allen about to prepare for his second NFL season, the Buffalo Bills may want to add another option a tight end.

In his first three seasons with the club, Charles Clay was targeted a combined 238 times and hauled in 157 passes for 1,638 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2018, admittedly with a rookie signal-caller and three other starters behind center, the eight-year pro saw a mere 36 throws his way. All told, he caught just 21 passes for only 184 yards and zero scores in 13 contests.

Is Clay still a viable option? There’s no reason to think otherwise. But tight end could be an area that the team addresses over the next few months.
