Denver Broncos 7-round mock for John Elway

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have already made the big move to bring in Joe Flacco this offseason, but they need to add significant talent in the draft too.

The Broncos hoped that signing Case Keenum would get them to the postseason in 2018, but his poor play was a big factor in their 6-10 record. Now John Elway and company are hoping that Joe Flacco can ride into town and get Denver back to the playoffs.

There’s a reason why the Ravens were willing to let Flacco leave for a small return. They realized he’s not a franchise signal caller anymore. He might provide the Broncos an upgrade over Keenum, but Vic Fangio can’t trust him to carry the offense in his first season in charge. Flacco will need a strong supporting cast to succeed.

Fortunately, the Broncos are armed with some extra draft picks to help make that happen. Elway has one extra selection in the fourth and fifth rounds at his disposal. Additionally, Denver heads into the draft with three selections in the seventh round. Expect the Broncos to be active in trade talks.

In this piece, we’ll walk you through a full mock draft for the franchise. Let’s start with a bit of a surprise in the first round.

Round 1: Drew Lock

The obvious temptation will be for the Broncos to use their No. 10 selection on a player who can help them win right away. Drafting Lock doesn’t accomplish that objective. It’s still the right move for the franchise’s long-term health.

Lock needs to add some polish to his game but his arm talent is obvious. He’s got just the sort of strength to drive the ball through harsh snow late in the season. Elway might even see a little bit of himself in the former Missouri star if he squints hard enough.

Flacco should remain the starter in 2019, but it’s time for Denver to find the right young quarterback to build around. Taking arguably the class’ top passer at No. 10 would be a bold, but savvy move for the Broncos.
